Tea Tree Essential Oil

What is Tea Tree Essential Oil?

Tea Tree Essential Oil has to be one of the most well known and popular essential oils, with its scent making it into a wide range of skin care and household products. We all know that it has anti-bacterial properties, but is this all it does?

Tea Tree Oil is distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca Tree. There are several varieties of this short, shrub like tree, each yielding a different essential oil. The most commercially popular and available variety of Tea Tree Oil is distilled from the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree which is indigenous to Australia.

Most of us will recognise the distinctive aroma of Tea Tree Oil. It is strong, fresh, camphoraceous and just smells clean and powerful. We like to blend Tea Tree with  a sweeter smelling essential oil to complement its powerful scent, Eucalyptus, Lavender and Peppermint oils work really well with it.

So what can Tea Tree Oil do for your skin?

Helps to fight spots and inflammation – Tea Tree Oil is packed full of anti-bacterial and  anti-microbial properties. When used on the skin it can help to reduce levels of bacteria that can cause spots and irritation.

Helps to reduce skin marks and scarring – The cicatrisant properties of Tea Tree help to heal skin and reduce the appearance of scarring and red marks.

Helps to keep feet in good condition – Tea Tree oil has good anti-fungal properties that help to keep athletes foot away.

Repels insects – Avoid insect bites, they don’t like Tea Tree Oil!

As with all essential oils, Tea Tree oil should always be applied to the skin with a carrier oil. Applying directly to the skin will cause irritation.

Can you use it around the house?

Tea Tree Oil is one of the best essential oils to add to natural handmade household cleaners because of its great anti-bacterial properties. Adding a few drops to a bowl of water to use for damp dusting keeps the dust down, house clean and gives a fresh natural scent.

Do we use it in our products?

Yeah we do, Tea Tree oil is far too good to miss out on!
We blend it in our Charcoal and Tea Tree Clay Soap for a deep cleansing soap with great antibacterial properties, and add a generous amount to our Healing Skin Balm. The Skin Balm is a good strong moisturiser that works on irritated skin and is wonderful for feet and cracked heels.
