Winter Skincare Tips

Skin can get dry and lose its lustre in Autumn and Winter months. Never mind the appearance, that tight feeling of having dry skin, and the irritation and itchiness that accompanies it just isn’t nice.

There are a few small steps we can take in these cold months that can help with this

Stay hydrated

It is so easy in the warmer months to drink lots of water and stay hydrated, but when it is cold outside the last thing we feel like doing is drinking ice water and it becomes easy to forget to drink what we need. But we need to hydrate from the inside – try hot lemon water and herbal teas to keep you warm and track your intake on an app if you find you need reminders

Keep the shower temperature down

This is easier said than done, especially if you have been outdoors and are keen to warm up fast.  Hot water is very drying on the skin and can leave you with that tight and itchy skin feeling. Turn the shower temperature down a notch and avoid super hot baths and your skin will thank you.

Use a humidifier indoors

Central heating does a great job at keeping us warm but definitely does dry our skin. Introduce a bit of moisture into the air by using a humidifier, or by placing  a small bowl of water next to a radiator. This makes the air less dry and kinder to our skin.

Wrap up outside

Cold winter wind does our skin no favours, so protect yourself whenever you are outdoors. Keep warm and cover up with gloves, hat and scarves.

Exfoliate

This is a year round job that helps to keep our skin healthy and glowing by removing the dead skin cells. Try using a gentle washcloth on your face, and a natural body brush on your body which is great at improving circulation too.

Moisturise

A good quality oil based moisturiser is great at hydrating dry winter skin. Use directly after a bath or shower to lock in the moisture all over the body, and twice a day on the face. Avoid using mineral oil based products as these tend to sit on the surface of the skin. Instead opt for a plant based oil rich in vitamins and minerals to nourish and look after your skin.
