FAQ

GENERAL FAQ

WHY NATURAL SKINCARE?

Because we like to look after our bodies, our health and the environment too. Choosing natural products means you know exactly what goes on your skin, and what is potentially absorbed into your blood stream. Choosing natural skincare means choosing plant based formulas that are nourishing and gentle to your skin, and that you are looking after your body using all the wonderful things given to us by nature.

We use the word natural in a very honest way and have full ingredients displayed on all of our product pages.

DO YOU USE PARABENS OR PRESERVATIVES?

All of our products are paraben free. All of our products, except one, are preservative free. Any product containing water needs to have a preservative system in it to prevent bacterial growth and keep the formula safe for skin use. It’s the preservative system that is used that is important, as some are synthetic and can cause skin issues.
We have one product that contains water and therefore uses a preservative system, the Aloe Vera and Seaweed Eye Gel. Aloe Vera is so beneficial to skin that it is a shame to dismiss it because it contains water, so we found a gentle and effective natural preservative system to use in the formula.

HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN, CAN I USE NAKED SKINCARE?

Sensitive skin is often caused by harsh detergent based cleansers and synthetic fragrances. Making the switch to gentle, natural formulas helps sensitive skin enormously. Naked skincare is just that!

I GET ECZEMA, IS THERE A PRODUCT YOU CAN RECOMMEND?

Firstly, we have to say that we cannot replace medical advice so please see your GP if you are struggling with eczema or any serious skin issues.
We do have one product that we have made for very dry sensitive skin, eczema and psoriasis. It will not cure these conditions but will provide topical relief and act as an emollient. The Hemp and Avocado Body Butter is unfragranced and super hydrating. It is also packed full of vitamins, minerals and fatty acids to help nourish the skin. This butter has recently won a Silver award in the Problem Skin category at the Free From Skincare Awards for its versatility and moisturising properties for eczema and problem skin.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS VEGAN?

Most of our products are, yes.
The only ingredient that we source from an animal is Beeswax, and we have chosen this because it in no way harms the bees, and supports the beekeeping industry at a time when it is really needed. We use Beeswax in our Lip Balms, Skin Balms and Candles.
This is the only ingredient sourced from an animal that we will ever use.

FACE

HOW DO YOU USE THE FACIAL CLEANSING OIL?

Step 1- take a 50p size blob of cleansing oil into the palm of your hand and massage into your face using small circular motions.
Step 2- Using a hot washcloth, wipe off the cleansing oil using small circular motions. Use a clean corner of the washcloth for each area of your face to make sure all the oil is removed. Pat skin dry.

It’s as easy as that. The cleanser will remove makeup and cleanse the skin and removing with the washcloth gently exfoliates. Use a clean washcloth each time.

WILL THE OIL CLEANSER BLOCK MY PORES?

No. We have chosen the oils in our blend very carefully to ensure they won’t block pores. Each oil is given a comodogenic rating of 0-5. A rating of 2 or lower is considered non-comodogenic, which means that it is an oil that will not block pores. The oils in our blend rate from 0-2.

AREN’T OILY PRODUCTS BAD FOR SPOT PRONE SKIN?

It feels counter intuitive to put oil on spot prone skin, after all excess sebum production blocks our pores to cause spots. However, using the right blend of plant oils helps to regulate the skins natural oil production and cleanse blocked pores, making it great to use for spot prone skin.

I HAVE OILY SKIN, CAN I USE OIL CLEANSING?

Yes you can. Oil cleansing is great for all skin types and is particularly good for oily skin as it can help to balance the skins own oil production.

WHEN SHOULD I USE A FACIAL OIL?

Any time you like. Go with what suits your skin and fits with your routine. Some prefer to use a generous amount of the Rejuvenate or Refine Facial Oil in the evening or before bed so they wake up with soft moisturised skin. The essential oils in the blend are very relaxing and calming before sleep too.  Some like to use the facial oils in the morning for a relaxing wake up. The Refine Facial Oil is ideal for using post morning shave and will absorb into skin very quickly.

DO YOU MAKE A BEARD OIL?

We like hardworking, multi-functional products so you don’t need bathroom shelves full of different bottles for different purposes. Many of our products can be used as a beard oil that will condition your beard and the skin underneath. Use a few drops of the Refine Facial Oil to seriously condition your beard and for a refreshing masculine scent. Or use a small amount of Skin Balm on your beard to condition and give a little hold.

DO YOU HAVE A MOISTURISING CREAM?

We don’t. To make a cream you need to combine water and oil with an emulsifying agent and a preservative to stop bacteria growing in the water. The oil in the formula is the most effective ingredient and the one that will provide moisture for your skin. So we skip the unnecessary fillers and use simple oil based balms and oil blends.  They feel different at first, especially if you have been using moisturising creams, but they are super effective, feel more luxurious, and you only need to use a small amount of them. Plus we keep them all natural.

DO YOU HAVE AN EXFOLIATOR?

We are huge fans of using dry Body brushing for all over body exfoliation- it has so many other benefits besides exfoliation. We have a blog post on it here where you can find out more. For facial exfoliation we recommend using the Ramie washcloth as it is gentle and won’t damage skin.

We are also working on a recipe book for exfoliating scrubs. A recipe book?! Yes, the best natural exfoliating scrubs are the ones you can make in your own kitchen so watch this space the book will be coming soon.

BODY

WHAT CAN I USE A SKIN BALM FOR?

The Skin Balms are one of our most versatile and hardworking products. They are an intense moisturiser so are great for all over the body, particularly hands, elbows, knees and feet. Use as a lip balm or cuticle balm. Smooth a small amount over your hair or beard to tame it and provide some hold. And my favourite? They make an amazing massage base for a hand, foot and neck and shoulder massage. Our blog article here has more info on our balms.

WHAT CAN I USE A BODY OIL FOR?

Body oils are perfect for all over moisturisation, simply massage into clean skin. They can also be added to a hot bath to soften and scent the water. For super multi-functional use, use as a hair treatment by working into clean hair, wrap in a towel or cling film for an hour, then wash out with shampoo.

I GET CRACKED HEELS AND ROUGH FEET, WHAT WOULD WORK FOR ME?

A skin balm is strong enough to treat cracked heels. Ideally use the Healing Skin Balm with its natural antibacterial and antifungal properties. Apply at least once a day.

THE HEMP AND AVOCADO BUTTER IS IN A SMALL POT, HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

It does depend on how much you use and what you use it for, but generally the pot lasts well. This is our most intense moisturiser for dry, problem skin and a little bit of it goes a very long way. One fingertip of Hemp and avocado Butter melts on contact with skin and spreads into a large surface area. One thing we want to do is offer value for money for our customers and make natural skincare accessible and affordable so we always offer generous product sizes.

DO YOU HAVE A BODY SCRUB/EXFOLIATOR

We are huge fans of using dry Body brushing for all over body exfoliation- it has so many other benefits besides exfoliation. We have a blog post on it here where you can find out more. For facial exfoliation we recommend using the Ramie washcloth as it is gentle and won’t damage skin.

SOAP

ISN’T SOAP A BIT OLD FASHIONED?

Yes and we love it! We use traditional cold process soap making methods but with up to date well researched ingredients that Grandma definitely didn’t have in her soap. Soap used to be made with tallow (animal fat) and could generally be a bit drying on the skin. We use carefully balanced oils for the right amount of cleansing, moisturising and bubbles, with clay for gentle cleansing and super bubbles and essential oils for delicious natural scents.

SOAP HAS ALWAYS DRIED MY SKIN OUT, WILL NATURAL SOAP BE ANY DIFFERENT?

Natural Soap feels very, very different on the skin. Our Clay Soaps have been carefully blended and superfatted to make sure they are gentle and kind on skin and that they don’t leave you with that tight squeaky feeling. Superfatted means that we add extra oils to the formula that aren’t turned into soap by the making process. These oils are there to moisturise your skin.

DO YOUR SOAPS HAVE ANY ANIMAL PRODUCTS IN?

None at all, suitable for vegans.

WHERE DOES THE COLOUR IN THE SOAP COME FROM?

We choose not to use artificial colourants or micas in our products but sometimes a dash of colour is nice, especially in a bar of soap. The colours in our soaps are all completely natural and have additional benefits to them too. The black colour comes from the Charcoal, which also acts as a deep cleanser. The orange in the Ginger Clay Soap is from Turmeric and has anti-inflammatory properties. The green in the Mint & Rosemary soap comes from the Spirulina which is an algae full of anti-oxidants and minerals.

WHAT DOES THE CLAY DO IN THE SOAP?

We use clay in our soaps for a few reasons, firstly, clay is a gentle cleanser that helps to draw out impurities from the skin. It provides extra skin benefits and transforms a standard bar of soap. Having clay in the formula also helps to maintain the scent, meaning that the scent benefits of the essential oils are far more powerful and stay for longer. And finally, the clay provides a lather like no other. Dense and silky bubbles feel great on your skin and last a long time.

DO YOU HAVE A SHAVING SOAP?

Yes we do. A shaving soap need to have dense bubbles that last and provide plenty of glide for a razor. All of our soaps will do this but the very best one to use is the Bergamot and Bentonite Clay Soap. The dense bubbles in this bar of soap are stand out amazing for shaving – it is currently being used in mens grooming salons as part of the luxury wet shave treatment

DO YOU USE PALM OIL IN YOUR SOAP

This was a big issue for us and one that we ummed and ahhed over for a long time. We have chosen to use RSPO certified sustainable palm oil in our soaps and this wasn’t a decision that was taken lightly. In brief, we felt that using RSPO sustainable palm oil was important to 1- use oil from a source that is sustainable 2- support an organisation that is key to transforming what has been a negative, and in some areas, very damaging industry. Palm oil is a fast and easy to grow crop with a large yield and has become understandably popular because of this. A regulatory organisation like the RSPO is vital to the safe and sustainable production of palm oil and we are happy to support their hardwork. For more information on what they do you can click here to go to their website, and for more details on why we have chosen to use RSPO sustainable palm oil click here.

CANDLES

WHAT WAX DO YOU USE?

We use 100% natural beeswax with no additives or fillers. This is one of the most incredible natural ingredients we have come across and it is great to work with and to use. It is a very hard wax with a very long burn time and amazingly it helps to clean and purify the air as it burns.

WHAT ARE THEY SCENTED WITH?

Just pure essential oils. Using a synthetic fragrance oil to scent means that unknown substances are burning in your home and they can often irritate lungs and skin. Choosing to use only essential oils means we know exactly which plant and flower oils have gone into each candle. They provide a natural scent for your home that is gentle for your home and body, with aromatherapy properties too.

WHAT WICK DO YOU USE?

A pure cotton wick that hasn’t been treated or coated with any substances.

HOW LONG DO THEY BURN FOR?

Each 100g candle will burn for over 25 hours. That is a super long burn for small candle. The scent also holds so each time the candle is lit, the natural scent is released. To ensure the longest burn time, make sure the candle melts all the way across before blowing it out. Do this the first time you burn it and you will have no issues with tunnelling.

WHY DO YOU USE BEESWAX AND NOT SOY WAX?

Good question, Soy wax is of course very popular, makes great candles and is vegan too. But there is something about Beeswax that we just love. The longer burn time, the air cleansing and purifying properties, the gorgeous honey and pollen aroma of the Beeswax, and the scent of the wax merging with the essential oil blends as they burn.
But then there are the bees. The bee population is struggling in the UK, and a declining bee population has serious implications for the environment. This is something that we care passionately about, and by buying UK sourced Beeswax we are supporting an industry that really needs it. The bees are not harmed in any way in the process (also very important to us), but are protected and their populations helped to increase.
